Image and Audio Restoration: Breathing New Life into Old Memories
Time does not only affect people, but also the media on which we capture our most precious moments. Magnetic tapes demagnetize, films oxidize, and analog recordings accumulate a layer of hiss and noise over decades that masks the original emotion. Professional restoration at Basqueluma goes far beyond simple digitization; it is a precise process of acoustic and visual purification.
The Art of Digital Reconstruction
When we speak of restoration, we do not mean the artificial smoothing of faces or the addition of details that never existed. Our approach in Innsbruck is focused on conservative recovery. We analyze the specific sources of degradation in your medium—whether it is the characteristic hum of an old reel-to-reel tape or the visual noise of a poorly stored videocassette—and apply targeted digital filters to reveal the original recording.
Many clients come to us after they have already digitized their media elsewhere, only to find that the quality is unwatchable or unlistenable. Heavy background noise or a flickering image can destroy the emotional impact of a family video or an old musical recording. By using specialized software and a trained ear, we work layer by layer to minimize interference and maximize visual clarity without losing the authentic character of the era.
Four Steps to Optimal Quality
Who is Restoration For?
Our services are aimed at individuals for whom mere visibility of an image is not enough. This includes families who wish to preserve their ancestral chronicles for future generations in a presentable quality, as well as musicians who need to prepare old demo recordings from the 70s or 80s for a re-release. Small associations or archives in Tyrol also utilize our expertise to free historical documentations from disturbing interference.
Restoration is particularly valuable for recordings created under suboptimal conditions or those stored for decades in damp basements or hot attics. When time has attacked the chemical structure of the medium, it often leaves traces in the form of image noise or acoustic dropouts, which we can correct digitally.
How the Technical Implementation Works
Restoration always takes place after digitization. We work with high-resolution raw data to ensure the maximum possible information base. In audio restoration, we use spectral editors that allow us to visually identify and precisely remove interference—such as a stuck microphone or wind noise—without distorting the speaker's voice.
In the visual domain, we focus on the removal of interlacing artifacts, the correction of color casts caused by the aging of magnetic tapes, and the slight stabilization of camera shakes. We avoid aggressive filters that make the image look "plastic" and instead rely on subtle improvements to contrast and sharpness.
Preparing Your Media
To achieve high-quality results, we ask you to hand over the media carefully. A detailed list is helpful: please mark sections that are particularly important to you or that appear heavily damaged. If you have information about the original recording quality (e.g., the microphone or camera used), please let us know.
Please send the media in stable packaging to our address at Maria-Theresien-Straße. We strongly recommend that you do not attempt your own physical cleaning (such as wiping tapes with alcohol), as this can irreversibly damage the magnetic layer.
The Result: What You Receive
Upon completion of the restoration, you will receive a digital file in a lossless or high-quality format (e.g., WAV for audio, MP4 with a high bitrate for video). You will receive the restored version and—upon request—the original digitization in its raw state, so you can judge the before-and-after effect for yourself.
Delivery is available either via a secured cloud download link, which is valid for 60 days, or on a USB storage medium provided by you. File naming is carried out strictly according to your specifications or a chronological list created by us.
Timeframes and Delivery
Restoration is a manual, time-intensive process. While simple digitization is fast, restoration requires a human ear and eye. The average turnaround time for an order is approximately 10 days, but this can vary depending on the effort required. In urgent cases, we offer express processing, which is priced with a 50% surcharge.
Please note that the total duration consists of the time for digitization plus the time for the actual restoration. We keep you updated on the progress via email.
Scope of Service and Limitations
It is important to understand that digital restoration is not magic. We can improve existing information and remove interference, but we cannot recover data that has been physically erased from the tape or completely destroyed by extreme mold. If a recording has gone completely silent, specialized software cannot recreate a voice.
Furthermore, we do not make copies of copyright-protected commercial productions. We only process private archives or material for which you hold the appropriate rights. The removal of copy protection mechanisms is not part of our offer.
Pricing and Taxes
Billing for restoration is based on an hourly rate, as the effort varies massively depending on the condition of the material. A heavily noisy tape requires significantly more time than a slight color correction. The prices listed in our table include the statutory VAT of 20%. For business customers (B2B), we provide prices net.
The final cost calculation is made after the initial analysis of your material. We will inform you of the estimated time required before we begin detailed processing.
