Video Cassette Digitization: Securing Your Memories for the Future
Magnetic tapes are fragile and decay over time. Whether it is old family celebrations, a child's first steps, or vacation footage from the 80s and 90s—time is working against these physical media. We rescue your video cassettes from gradual data loss and transfer them into modern, future-proof digital formats.
In our Innsbruck studio, we utilize specialized hardware to extract high image and sound quality from your analog tapes. We pay particular attention to the mechanical integrity of your originals. We understand that these recordings are irreplaceable, and we treat every medium with the meticulous care required for archival work.
The digitization process is more than simple copying. It involves precisely capturing the analog signal structure and translating it into a digital format that can be played on any modern television, tablet, or smartphone, removing the need for obsolete VCRs or failing playback equipment.
Four Steps to Your Digital Archive
Intake and Inspection
We receive your cassettes, log them in a detailed inventory list, and inspect the mechanical condition of the tapes as well as the integrity of the plastic housings.
Optimized Playback
Each tape is played on a drive optimized for its specific format. If necessary, we perform careful cleaning of the contacts to minimize image noise and tracking errors.
Digital Transfer
The analog signal is captured in real-time and converted into high-quality digital formats such as MP4, ensuring stable synchronization between audio and video tracks.
Delivery
You receive your files via a secure cloud download or on a physical storage medium of your choice. Your original cassettes are returned to you safely.
Who is this service for?
Our service is primarily designed for individuals with private family archives. Often, cassettes have spent decades in attics or basements, exposing them to humidity and temperature fluctuations. We help you recover these treasures before the magnetic tape becomes brittle or the oxide layer begins to flake off.
Beyond families, we support local associations, small institutions, or musicians who wish to secure early video documentations of their work. Being based in Innsbruck, we offer personal handover of the media, which is highly recommended for exceptionally valuable or fragile originals.
How the technical implementation works
The digitization of video cassettes is a linear process, meaning a 120-minute tape requires exactly 120 minutes of processing time. We use professional Timebase Correctors (TBC) to smooth out jitter and image jumps, which are common occurrences in old analog tapes. This ensures the digital image remains as stable as possible.
We support a wide range of formats: from classic VHS and compact VHS-C to early 2000s digital formats like MiniDV, as well as analog Video8 and Hi8 systems. Each format requires a specific drive and tailored signal processing to ensure high sharpness and color fidelity.
Preparing your media
To ensure a smooth workflow, we ask that you transport your cassettes in a stable, protective box. It is very helpful if you include a list of contents or have the cassettes clearly labeled. This facilitates the correct naming of the resulting files and accelerates the overall process.
If you suspect that your tapes are damaged or show signs of mold, please inform us in advance. In such cases, special handling is required to prevent the contamination of other equipment in the studio. For more detailed tips, please see our guide: How to Prepare Your Cassettes.
What you receive at the end
The result of your digitization is a collection of video files in a universal format (standard MP4 with H.264 codec), which offers high compression while maintaining excellent quality. The files are named to correspond with your original list or labels.
You can choose between a secure cloud download link, active for a limited time, or delivery on a USB stick or external hard drive. Naturally, you will receive all your original cassettes back in the same condition in which they were handed over to us.
Timeframes and delivery
Processing time depends heavily on the volume of your archive. Since digitization happens in real-time, larger collections require more time. Generally, the average turnaround is about 10 days. According to our business rules, the standard turnaround time is up to 12 working days.
Should you have an urgent deadline, we offer express processing, which incurs a surcharge of 50% of the regular price. Please discuss tight deadlines directly with us via the contact form.
What is NOT included in the service
We focus on the faithful digitization of your private recordings. Please note that for legal reasons, we do not make copies of commercial films, purchased music videos, or other copyrighted works.
Similarly, the removal of copy protection mechanisms is not part of our offering. If the image is irretrievably lost due to physical damage to the tape (e.g., deep tears or severe chemical decomposition), digitization cannot fix these defects. Deep digital image restoration is a separate service, which you can find under Image and Audio Restoration.
Pricing and VAT
Our pricing is based on the number of cassettes processed. The prices listed in the table below include the statutory VAT of 20% in Austria. For business clients, we provide the net amount separately.
Final billing is based on the actual number of successfully digitized media. For larger orders, a deposit of 30% is agreed upon to reserve studio capacity. All details regarding payment processing can be found in our Terms.
